  • Keep it outside: You should always place your generator outside when operating it. Even if you are powering tools indoors, never put your generator inside, as this can cause a dangerous build-up of carbon monoxide.

Grounding A Portable Generator

Part of safely operating your generator is knowing how to ground it. Grounding a generator involves attaching a copper grounding wire to the neutral electric conductor terminals. This wire moves faulty electricity from the generator to the ground, keeping you and your equipment safe. All portable generators need grounding. Failing to do so can result in:

  • Overheating of devices which can cause fire
  • You or your employees getting an electric shock
  • Electrical overload which can damage the generator
  • Explosion caused by stray electricity contacting fuel tanks

While every situation may differ, here are some general steps that can help you to ground your generator successfully.

  1. Install the rod: Use a hammer to install the rod into the ground to the correct depth according to local electrical codes. If rocks are in the ground, you can install the rod at an angle not exceeding 45 degrees. Cover any remaining rod parts with a protective clamp to keep people around it safe while the generator runs.
  2. Remove insulation off the copper wire: Before coiling the copper wire on the ground round, you’ll need to strip off 6-12 inches of insulation.
  3. Coil the copper wire: Use a pair of pliers to coil the copper wire around the ground rod.
  4. Attach the copper wire: While the generator is off, loosen the grounding bolt and twist the copper wire tightly around it. Then, tighten the bolt using a wrench.
  5. Test the connection: Once done, it’s best to have an electrician test the connection. An ohmic resistance of zero indicates a stable connection.
