Should You Only Refurbish Engines?
Depending on the situation, a generator itself may not necessarily need to be refurbished, but any associated generator accessories may require some level of work.
Enclosures
Generator enclosures often face exposure to the elements and are the front line of defense that both house and protect a generator from inclement weather, debris, and other hazards. Over time, the enclosure can experience wear and tear and may require refurbishing to ensure that can continue to providing protection to your generator. Common reasons that customers refurbish their generator enclosure range from door handles being broken and need replacing, door hinges could be broken or worn out, there could be rust spots that need to be addressed before they get worse, weatherproof seals or gaskets need replacing, or even cosmetic reasons such as faded paint.
Fuel Tanks
Diesel generator base tanks are also another part of the generator set that is commonly refurbished. While there are many different reasons why, some of the most common are for generators that are not regularly serviced and maintained. As a diesel generator sits idly, the diesel fuel stored within the tank can go bad over time due to water or contaminants, which not only breeds bacteria and fungus, but can result in a sediment byproduct known as sludge. Additionally, water can corrode steel fuel tank lining and injector parts, so when the generator is finally started up, it could clog the fuel injection system completely. Often times, refurbishing a diesel fuel tank involves draining the tank completely, cleaning out any foreign matter within the tank, and inspecting, servicing, and replacing components if needed before filling it back up with diesel fuel. In other instances, if you’re located in an area that experiences a lot of rain and moisture, the exterior of diesel generator base tanks can begin to rust. While you may think that it is just a cosmetic issue, rust left untreated can eventually spread and corrode parts of the tank, which can not only negatively impact the performance of the tank, but can also eventually make it unsafe to be used for diesel fuel storage.
