Emergency & Standby Generators for Commercial Buildings

Commercial buildings in the US are considered buildings and facilities that constantly experience many visitors throughout the day. A commercial building could be a store with a showroom, retail stores, wholesale warehouses, drugstores, and department stores. Due to the nature of these establishments, commercial buildings are subjected to general requirements when it comes to emergency and standby generators, which fall under the NFPA 110 Standard for Emergency & Standby Power Systems in the United States.

Backup Generator Solutions

There are 3 main types of backup generators that are used within commercial buildings, with 2 of these generator types being a requirement by the NFPA 110 standards, because they can provide the backup power necessary for key loads. It should be noted that while we may cover the overall topic of these generator types, requirements may vary state to state and county by county.

Emergency Generator Systems

These backup generator systems automatically provide backup power in the event of power loss due to power outage. These types of generators are required by NFPA code and must provide power within 10 seconds to all safety systems, like exit lighting, smoke alarm and evacuation systems, fire alarm systems, escalators, elevators, and basically anything that is absolutely necessary for visitors and building occupants to egress in a quick and safe manner during life-threatening situations. Emergency generator systems also must be completely separate and have their own electrical conduits, own panels, switches, etc.

Legally Required Standby Generator Systems

These backup generator systems are similar to emergency generator systems, except that they have up to 60 seconds to automatically switch on and provide power. While these generators are also required by NFPA code, they are not required to be completely separate systems like emergency generator systems. The difference with these systems versus emergency power systems is in the fact that they are not critically needed for safety, but are more required to enhance egress measures and not critical for occupant safety.

Additional Standby Commercial Generators

Any additional standby commercial generators added to the building or facility is not a requirement by code, but can be used to provide power to key equipment, machinery, and systems that the business owner may find necessary to continue their regular operations in the event of a power outage. Essentially, these backup generators can help mitigate profit loss and losses due to downtime. Additionally, these generators can help keep heating & cooling systems running to provide continued comfort for all occupants if desired. These generator systems can also connect to the same system components as the standby generator systems required by law (not the emergency generator systems).
