Renewable Diesel Breakdown: The Basics

With the increase in demand for cleaner energy alternatives and fuel sources, there has been a large focus on diesel engines and the future of diesel-powered equipment. While the fate of older diesel generators, often used generators that may meet older EPA Tier ratings or may not meet EPA Tier ratings at all is unsure, many manufacturers have begun to make a move to focusing on producing diesel engine equipment that can run off renewable hydrocarbon fuels known as HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) or RD (Renewable Diesel).

What is HVO exactly?

HVOs are a type of biofuel created as a substitute for gasoline, diesel, propane, and kerosene also synonymously known as green diesel or renewable diesel. This is essentially achieved by processing and synthesizing lipids found in vegetable oils, animal fats, or cooking oils and either breaking larger hydrogen molecules into smaller molecules or adding hydrogen to existing molecules. This results in lower waste being produced and a reduction of carbon compounds found in particulate matter and greenhouse gases released during the combustion process produced by engines while running.

Why Are HVOs Considered a Cleaner Alternative?

This is due to the purity of the renewable diesel blend. Depending on the concentration used, CO2 emissions can be reduced by up to 90%, NOx emissions up to 18%, and fuel consumption can be lowered by up to 4.3%. HVO can also be used in many newer conventional diesel engines and considered a substitute for traditional diesel fuel.

Are Older Generation Engines Qualified for Use with HVO Fuels?

Simply speaking, from a general standpoint – currently older generation engines are not qualified for use with HVO fuels. This is due to the new standard known as EN 15940 that has been put into place. Engines will need to be recertified to meet emissions requirements.

Why Are HVOs Not Beyond Rapidly Adopted?

One of the biggest issues with adopting HVO is availability when it comes to scaling in terms of production, distribution, and higher costs. This is due to the fact that HVO is produced from waste from crops, rather than the crop itself. This means that there would not be enough supply to meet a larger scale demand. Additionally, storing of HVO fuels can lead to similar contamination and condensation issues like with diesel #2 when stored.

HVO and renewable diesel fuels have been a more recent development and many future innovations are being implemented in order to help make the switch over to these fuel types. Since HVOs and other renewable diesel fuels are still being refined, this industry could be considered an ever-changing landscape. While we covered the basics, there are many new developments and practices being implemented that can change the course of HVOs/RDs. For instance, many big generator manufacturers such as Kohler and Cummins have been developing engines that can accept and run off these types of fuel and we will most likely see this as part of a market shift in the future.

If you have any questions about HVO/RD fuels or looking for a generator that can run off these fuels, feel free to reach out to us at Woodstock Power Company. We have brand new generators that are capable of running off HVO/RD in various kW ranges.
