Choosing An Automatic Transfer Switch by Application

When it comes to backup generators for a business or facility, it’s usually recommended to pair the genset with an automatic transfer switch or ATS for short. This enables the backup generator to run and distribute power to a facility by automatically switching to generator power during instances where connection to the main electrical grid is disconnected due to power loss or planned service or maintenance and prompts the generator to turn off when power is restored. Though this may be common knowledge for some, it may not be as well known to others.

Though the general concept of how an automatic transfer switch works, there are many intricacies involved and certain instances or applications where a more specialized ATS may be required and not a situation of “one size fits all” when it comes to and automatic transfer switch.

While there are many considerations to make before deciding on what type of ATS unit to purchase and install, here are a few items to consider that may help the decision-making process.

Automatic Transfer Switch by Application

Switched Neutral Configuration

This type of automatic transfer switch is one of the most commonly used automatic transfer switches installed for basic applications when installing a backup generator for a business or facility.

Service Entranced Rated (SER)

This type of automatic transfer switch is used for businesses or facilities that have a single connection to the utility and the SER rated automatic transfer switch is located near the entrance of an backup generator or other emergency backup power source. These types of ATS units have a utility circuit breaker disconnect, which enable users to disconnect utility power from the facility if maintenance is needed or in situations of emergencies. Placement of these ATS units is important because these units are designed to ensure backup power can quickly be shifted safely over to backup or emergency power when there is power loss to the main electrical grid. Similar to a switched neutral configuration, a service entrance rated automatic transfer switch can be used for many common applications. A service entrance rated transfer switch can be used for many commercial and industrial applications and certain instances that require critical response.

Bypass Isolation

This type of automatic transfer switch allows for the ATS unit to undergo service without interrupting power. While this type of ATS would be considered extremely complicated to deal with, it is also the most capable unit of the three. A bypass isolation automatic transfer switch is made up of two systems that usually run in parallel, which allows technicians to perform inspection, maintenance, and testing to the primary automatic transfer switch without causing interruption of power to the load. This is achieved in part thanks to a dual switching function that provides redundancy for critical applications if the primary ATS is disabled or taken down from service by removing power from the primary transfer switch mechanism and re-routes power through the secondary transfer switch mechanism. This ensures continuous power flow to loads. It should be noted that this type of ATS unit is not used for every single application, but are used for more specialized applications where high priority, critical response, or life saving systems are required.

Automatic transfer switches can be an extremely very involved process that requires a deep understanding to safely configure and properly install. There are many factors and considerations that must be made when evaluating the scope of a project and specific needs for an application.
