What hurricane season 2017 taught us!

Caught off guard!

Before the first drop of rain from hurricane Harvey hit the ground on August 25th, the commercial generator industry was experiencing a storm of its own. Just a few short weeks before the Category 5 was scheduled to make landfall property managers, facility directors and maintenance crews were scrambling to get their respective facilities prepared. Caught off guard by the massive destruction heading their way, many professionals found themselves facing untested emergency backup systems, generators in dire need of service and fuel in short supply.

We all know the devastation Harvey caused to west Texas and Louisiana, and the next few weeks followed with Irma wreaking havoc on Florida and hurricanes Jose and Maria literally crippling Puerto Rico. This has put all of us in the commercial generator business on the constant lookout for any and all generators we can get our hands on to ship to these affected areas. In the last month, Woodstock Power alone has sent dozens of generators to Houston, Miami, and San Juan. In many cases, it was too late to prevent the loss of power to critical care facilities and prevent loss of life.

2018 hurricane season is already predicted to be just as bad if not worse than 2017. Experts advise that hospitals, nursing homes, and rehabs start preparing now for next year. Many municipalities are enacting tougher legislation and regulations on emergency and standby power generation systems in an effort to prevent the widespread outages that place sick, elderly and injured lives at risk. With the death toll from Harvey at 77, from Irma at 132 and at last count 42 and rising from Jose and Maria in Puerto Rico, now is the time to start planning for 2018.
