Generator Basics: CAT, Cummins and Kohler

There are many companies involved in manufacturing commercial generators worldwide. However, a few names stick out as industry favorites. This article will give a quick history lesson of three of the top commercial generator companies we work with, in no particular order.

Caterpillar Inc.

Recognized by their signature yellow paint, Caterpillar generators enjoy a stellar reputation for reliability and resale value. Founded in 1925 with the union of two American tractor manufactures -Holt Manufacturing and C.L. Best Tractor Company-, the founders revolutionized the steam tractor industry by developing wooden tracks attached by chains and adding them to an early Holt steamer. Military contracts during WWI and WWII helped grow the company exponentially during the 20th century, combined with the successful acquisition of several diesel engine companies including Perkins, Kato Engineering, and Krupp.

With over 400 products for sale, 3516 and XQ series of generator engines remain in high demand.

Cummins, Inc.

Founded in 1919 in Columbus, Indiana by a small engine mechanic, Cummins Engines started with furthering the development of the diesel engine, finding initial commercial success in 1933. Spurred on by the road building boom that occurred in Post WWII America, Cummins quickly become the industry leader with its famous N series engines powering more than half of the heavy equipment being used. With the acquisition of American generator company Onan in 1992, Cummins Inc. became the world’s largest designer and manufacturer of diesel engines ranging from 55- to 2,700-horsepower.

Popular models include the QS Series, C Series Rental Units and the NT Series of commercial generator sets.

Kohler Co.

Noted for its diverse product line which includes plumbing fixtures, bathroom tile, and even public water fountains, the 144-year-old company was the first to offer residential backup generators, starting in 1920. Traditionally a maker of gasoline engines, most Kohler diesel gen-sets were Kohler generators with a secondary engine maker, like John Deere. The 2007 acquisition of Italian engine manufacturer Lombardini allowed Kohler to expand its diesel line and sell packages solely branded as Kohler.

The 30RE0ZJB, 80REOZJD, and the 500REOZVB are just a few of the popular models available in the used market.
