Generator Basics: Load Bank Testing

Load Bank Testing: The basics…..

This is a simple overview of the concepts and benefits of professionally load bank testing your commercial generator.

Helpful Terms:

Load Bank:

According to Wikipedia, a load bank is a device which develops an electrical load, applies the load to an electrical power source and converts or dissipates the resultant power output of the source.

A load bank can also be described as a self-contained, unitized, systematic device that includes load elements with control and accessory devices required for operation.

Basically, it’s a large rectangular machine that plugs into your commercial generator for testing purposes. It’s usually mobile.

Resistive Load:

Wikipedia again: A resistive load bank removes energy from the complete system: load bank from generator—generator from prime mover—prime mover from fuel.

This means the load bank pulls the power from the entire generator set, causing the running engine to work at 100% percent of its capacity.

The Benefits:

Running the unit at 100% ensures that peak operating temperatures are reached and sustained long enough to reveal any problems in the system. It usually takes up to four hours to reach operating temps and an additional two hours for testing.

The cooling system is most common for failures. The load bank test will show any problems with the water pump, thermostat, radiator, and coolant.

It will also identify signs of wet-stacking, a common condition in generators that are routinely run at a small percentage of their rated power. Running at 100% during the test helps remove the effects of wet stacking, like carbon build up and black smoke.

Finally, the main benefit of a load bank test is confirmation that your generator is ready to serve its purpose. Many industries and municipalities require mission-critical and life-sustaining backup power systems meet specific standards of operability that only a professional load bank test can verify.
